Sharon L. Ernst was the chief metabolic dietitian in the Division of Medical Genetics, University of Utah, for over 20 years. In addition, she was an Associate Professor (Clinical) in the Department of Pediatrics and a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Nutrition and Integrative Physiology, College of Health. In 2015 she left academia to pursue other interests in the private sector. Ms. Ernst is the Founder and Principal of Nutritional Designs, LLC. Her current activities focus on providing expert nutrition information, education, strategic planning, and leadership to organizations working with genetic and metabolic disorders. She has consulted with pharmaceutical companies that develop orphan drugs for rare disorders of inborn errors and specialized medical nutrition companies that provide products to manage inherited metabolic diseases and other conditions requiring medical nutritional therapy. Ms. Ernst has coauthored numerous publications and has received multiple awards, including recognition as Young Dietitian of the Year and a teaching award as Preceptor of the Year in the Division of Nutrition, College of Health, University of Utah. Ms. Ernst is a founding member of the Genetic Metabolic Dietitians International (GMDI), served as vice president of the Intermountain PKU and Allied Disorders Association (IPAD), and was on the Board of Directors for the National PKU Alliance (NPKUA.org).
