From Golden Standards to Individual Reality - Breaking Down Nutrition Management for GSDIa

  • Elizabeth Toolan, MS, RD, LD - Washington University St. Louis - St. Louis, MO

As nutrition management of GSDIa continues to progress, existing guidelines remain dated,
and treatment strategies vary. Although the GSDIa treatment plan requires a tailored approach,
the ultimate goals of therapy remain consistent - avoid hypoglycemia, ensure metabolic stability,
meet nutritional requirements, and create a plan that accommodates the individual's lifestyle.
This presentation will take a realistic approach to assessing, planning, and monitoring the nutrition plan
in various complex scenarios. The goal is to empower dietitians and boost their confidence when treating
those with GSDIa. Time will be allocated for questions and to share experiences to further enrich
our understanding of best practices for the treatment of GSDIa.

*You must register for this session in advance as part of your conference registration.
Registration is limited to metabolic dietitians in clinical practice or research.

The symposium will feature an interactive panel discussion between experts sharing their valuable insights on:

  • The evolution of the PKU diet and impact on patients at different ages
  • Understanding the existing evidence supporting current blood Phe treatment targets
  • The risks and benefits of aiming for normal Phe levels with unrestricted diet
and the need for more evidence
