With new therapies, including gene therapy, potentially on the horizon for the treatment of inborn errors of metabolism, the role of the metabolic dietitian will continue to evolve and remain critical. The symposium will begin with a brief overview of GSDIa, the mechanisms of gene therapy and current nutritional guidance for the treatment of GSDIa. Heather Saavedra will draw on her clinical and research experience to share valuable and applicable lessons related to the nutritional management of GSDIa. She will focus on the interpretation of biochemical changes and continuous glucose monitor (CGM) trends in GSDIa and demonstrate how diet and cornstarch modifications impact metabolic stability. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how medical nutrition therapy for the treatment of GSDIa has and will continue to evolve.
