The nutrition needs and goals for critically ill patients have been well established in non-metabolic populations. However, metabolic disease lends its own unique challenges for management, as the nutrition intervention is irreplaceable to the safety and successful medical treatment of metabolic patients and is uniquely curated to address the metabolic block for each specific disease. While adequate nutrition support is vital in both scenarios separately, challenges arise when trying to determine an appropriate and effective nutrition plan when both are occurring simultaneously. The purpose of this presentation is to outline the unique needs in both fields and identify the challenges and considerations that present when a patient with an inborn error of metabolism is critically ill.
This workshop occurs on Friday from 1:30 - 2:30pm and is repeated from 3:30 - 4:30pm.
